what are European Structural Funds?

The European Union gives aid to less developed regions of Europe in the form of Structural Funds. The East of Scotland is one of a number of regions within the UK to receive and benefit from these Funds. Structural Funds are targeted on specific problems or areas of economic need. The East of Scotland receives what is known as European Regional Development Funds (ERDF).

Structural funds are delivered through three “objectives”. These are

Objective 1 (ERDF) : This helps to redevelop regions seriously lagging behind the EU average, which in Scotland is the Highlands & Islands of Scotland.

Objective 2 (ERDF) : This seeks to revitalise regions affected by serious industrial decline. To qualify, regions must meet three criteria: an unemployment rate higher than the EU average, a higher percentage of industrial employment than the EU average, and a decline in industrial employment. The East of Scotland is an Objective 2 area.

Objective 3 (ESF) : This is applicable throughout the UK, and helps to improve the situation of the long term unemployed, the young and those deemed to be ‘socially excluded’.
