The Eastern Scotland Objective 2 Programme is an economic development programme in which job creation and improved economic prosperity are central. However, both the European Commission and the UK Government are committed to developing policies and practices for Sustainable Development. The Eastern Scotland European Partnership is leading the field in integrating Sustainable Development into economic development programmes. Technology & Innovation - International Research Centre, Pentlands Science Park Our approach is to recognise that regional economic development must take into account the need to respect the environment and that local communities and individuals are not excluded or disadvantaged by economic development activities. Fundamentally, Sustainable Development is all about securing improvements in the local economy; making wise use of resources and tackling social exclusion; minimising any adverse impacts on the environment, whilst at the same time providing new and additional employment opportunities for the worst affected areas in Eastern Scotland. Future programmes in Eastern Scotland will be designed in accordance with Sustainable Development principles.
