important announcement
mainstreaming the horizontal themes
joint Objective 2 East, Objective 3 conference

Friday, 29 October 2004
Business Learning Centre, Lauder College, Dunfermline

The aims of the conference are to showcase practical examples of how the horizontal themes of Equal opportunities and Sustainable Development have been integrated into the design and delivery of ERDF and ESF projects. The conference will also provide the opportunity to launch 3 new publications which contain new insights, improved practical guidance and case studies on how to mainstream the Horizontal Themes.

Notwithstanding, the fact that the Commission hold in high regard the Scottish approach to mainstreaming the Horizontal Themes, and we are making progress, much remains to be done. We need to continue to raise awareness of the benefits of mainstreaming Equal Opportunities and Sustainable Development across the spectrum of regional development: to learn from experience and examples of good practice. This conference will provide an effective opportunity with its emphasis on practical workshops based around live projects (ESF and ERDF) to share experience and learn how others have addressed these important policy areas.

The conference is accordingly addressed not only to European Officers but project promotors, policy officers and executives with responsibility for disciplines which impact upon economic development such as transport and planning.

We are certain that the conference will provide an opportunity for exchange of experience, and would hope that some valuable insights will emerge for wider debate.
